Xian Y-20

The Xian Y-20 (Chinese: 运-20) is a large military transport aircraft. The project is being developed by Xian Aircraft Industry Corporation and was officially launched in 2006. The official codename of the aircraft is Kunpeng (Chinese: 鲲鹏). after the mythical bird of ancient China that can fly for thousands of kilometers. However, within the Chinese aviation industry itself, the aircraft is more commonly known by its nickname Chubby Girl (Chinese: 胖妞), because its wide fuselage in comparison to other Chinese aircraft previously developed in China.

Variants[edit | edit source]

  • Xian Y-20A: Base variant, with Soloviev D-30KP-2 engines.
  • Xian Y-20B: Variant with four WS-20 engines.
  • Xian YY-20: Aerial tanker variant able to carry about 90 tons of fuel, similar to the role of Il-78. The tanker variant features redesigned landing gear sponsors. Previously known as Y-20U or YU-20, but was confirmed as YY-20.
  • Xian Y-20 AEW: Airborne early warning and control variant under development.
