VAW-800 "Dark Knight" Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron is a unit within the Royal Canadian Navy Fleet Air Arm.

Originally activated aboard HMCS Eagle, VAW-800 would be later assigned to HMCS Warrior (CV-24) and is to be assigned aboard HMCS Magnificent.

History[edit | edit source]

After being assigned aboard HMCS Warrior in 1997, the sequadron would complete transition to the CE-2C Hawkeye, retiring the well-used CE-1 Tracers used aboard HMCS Eagle (CV -23). They would see service in the Balkans, provided AEW support to NATO forces operating in the former Yugoslavia.

By 2010, members of VAW-800 had nicknamed individual aircraft after actors who portrayed the fictional superhero Batman. This included actors Kevin Conroy, Michael Keaton, Adam West, and Christian Bale.

In the 2020s, the Squadron would transition to the Viking Air/DeHavilland Canada CE-115NVE Viking Farsight as the unit also prepared for reassignment aboard the Victorious-class carrier HMCS Magnificent.
