The Type 42 or Sheffield-class, are guided missile destroyers used by the British Royal Navy and the Argentine Navy (who would sell their Type 42s to Canada in 1987). The first ship of the class was ordered in 1968 and launched in 1971. Two of the class (HMS Sheffield and HMS Coventry) were sunk in the Falklands War of 1982.

Two ships remain active in the Canadian Forces Maritime Command. The Royal Navy has replaced them with Type 43 and Type 45 destroyers.
