The CCGS John G. Diefenbaker was a Polar 8 class Icebreaker in the Canadian Coast Guard named after deceased 13th Prime Minister of Canada, John G. Diefenbaker. The John G. Diefenbaker was ordered in October 2004 as part of a large procurement program that included six Victoria-class submarines and the purchase of 86 CF-184C Supercats. The Diefenbaker would be laid down in November of 2004 and launched in September 2006 from the Versatile Pacific Shipyard in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Diefenbaker would be stationed at CFB Navasivik along with the Robert Stanfield. Also in 2006, the Canadian government ordered a second pair of Polar 8 icebreakers for the coast guard (which were named the John Edward Broadbent and Roald Amundsen). In May 2011, the Diefenbaker and Stanfield would lead the Warrior battlegroup through the Northwest Pasage during its trip from CFB Esquimalt to the drydock facilities at Saint John Shipbuilding in Saint John, New Brunswick.
